Aldeburgh 2014: Orford Ness
Orford Ness is a vegetated shingle spit (the largest in Europe) off the coast of Suffolk. Owned by the Ministry of Defence since the first world war, it was the site of tests for radar, photography and even certain aspects of atomic weapons. Now owned by the National Trust, it is a nature reserve, while the military buildings and former BBC World Service transmitter site falls into decay. The 2014 Aldeburgh festival included an art installation by Anya Gallaccio, but it was dwarfed by the what was already there.
